The Wellcome Trust has announced that applications are now open for biomedical resource grants and multi-user equipment grants as part of its themed Strategic Awards. The announcement is available on the Wellcome Trust website here and a short summary of each programme follows.

Biomedical Resource Grants

Biomedical resource grants are intended to provide support for researchers wishing to establish or maintain biomedical resources (including databases and collections) for the benefit of the wider scientific community. Applications should take into account the needs of the wider research community and be supported by evidence of need for the resource.

Evidence of access and data management policies that enable optimal use of these resources is required, together with a business plan that addresses sustainability in the medium to long term. Applicants should also demonstrate how the resource would add value to Wellcome Trust-funded research.

Up to five years’ support is available, for expenses including:

  • salaries for staff;
  • materials and consumables;
  • animals;
  • equipment purchase and maintenance; and
  • travel and attendance at scientific meetings.

In the first instance prospective applicants should contact the Wellcome Trust to discuss any potential application. Allow good time to form a preliminary application before the deadline of 18th October 2011.

Further information, including eligibility criteria and contact details is available here.

Multi-User Equipment Grants

Equipment grants are intended to provide support for multi-user items of equipment, including equipment required to create a central resource for a number of disparate scientific programmes. Applicants should demonstrate how the requested equipment would enhance Wellcome Trust-funded investments in strategic areas of interest and add value to Wellcome Trust-funded research.

Up to five years’ support is available, and expenses may include:

  • the purchase and essential running and maintenance costs of equipment; and
  • salaries for staff necessary to run and/or manage the apparatus (but not for experimental research personnel).

Awards are anticipated in the range £75,000 to £1 million.

In the first instance prospective applicants should contact the Wellcome Trust to discuss any potential application. Allow good time to form a preliminary application before the deadline of 18th October 2011.
