The Medical Research Council (MRC) has announced that its ‘Experimental Medicine Challenge Grants’, focusing on ‘Studies of Disease Mechanisms in Humans’ will be launched in early 2012.  According to MRC:

The “Challenge Grants” initiative will support ambitious, challenge-led studies of disease mechanisms in humans. These studies will produce major new mechanistic insights into human disease, with potential applicability to new therapeutic approaches and opportunities for “reverse translation” to more basic research.

The scheme’s budget will be £20m/year, and the scheme will run for 3 years initially.

Applications should aim to produce a substantial improvement in understanding of disease mechanisms, and must be challenge-led, human-focused and ambitious. Projects should address substantial, important medical questions.

The anticipated funding range is £2-4m per 5 year award.

This call follows standard RCUK eligibility criteria. Further information is available on the MRC website here.

Update (Feb 2012): The deadline for outline applications is 19th April 2012.
